North American P-51D-10, 55th FG, 338th SQ, flown by Lt.Col. Elwyn Righetti, the top scoring strafer in the 8th Air Force (27 strafing victories, with an additional 7.5 aerial victories). This commissioned 8" x 24" oil painting shows him on his last mission on 17 April, 1945, which he didn't survive. In every book about fighter pilots in Europe in World War 2 that I've read, fighter pilots considered strafing ground targets, especially highly defended Luftwaffe airfields, was far more dangerous than fighter versus fighter aerial combat.
Douglas Castleman is an award-winning artist and photographer based in Los Angeles (Torrance, California). His aerospace art has garnered the American Society of Aviation Artist (ASAA) Artist Fellow status, and some of his paintings are in the collections at the US Air Force Art Collection (Pentagon) and the NASA Permanent Art Collection (Neil Armstrong Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California).
