Title
Strafing Mustang
Artist
Douglas Castleman
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
North American P-51D-10, 55th FG, 338th SQ, flown by Lt.Col. Elwyn Righetti, the top scoring strafer in the 8th Air Force (27 strafing victories, with an additional 7.5 aerial victories). This commissioned 8" x 24" oil painting shows him on his last mission on 17 April, 1945, which he didn't survive. In every book about fighter pilots in Europe in World War 2 that I've read, fighter pilots considered strafing ground targets, especially highly defended Luftwaffe airfields, was far more dangerous than fighter versus fighter aerial combat.
