Vought F7U-3M Cutlass, a small 8"x 10" oil painting the less than fully successful US Navy fighter jet, depicted here as one from VF-83 flying off of the USS Intrepid, 1956. As a first generation jet fighter, which first flew as early as 1948, this was considered a really advanced design incorporating many new features and used some German wartime aeronautic research. I think it had a really interesting look.
Like many early jets, it suffered from underperforming jet engines, which, along with some other flaws, didn't allow it to have a long service life and was retired in 1959. The type was responsible for the deaths of four test pilots and 21 other U.S. Navy pilots...tragic but actually not too unusual for the time. However, the next Vought design, the F8U, was very successful.
