Description
On December 21, 1968, humans first left the pull of the Earth's gravity when the third stage of the Saturn V rocket fired to put Astronauts Bowman, Lovell, and Anders on the way to orbit the moon on the following Christmas Eve. This extremely bold mission was called Apollo 8. While orbiting the moon, they were the first humans to see the farside of the moon (very often erroneously called the "darkside of the moon") and they read from the Bible to the world and first photographed the Earthrise over the moon, one of the most famous of all photographs ever taken, and some saying the most famous ever. The third stage is called the S-IVB, built by the Douglas Aircraft Company, and its J-2 engine fired twice with its 225,000 lbs. thrust engine. The first firing was to place the astronauts in a "parking" orbit and the second time, painted here, to push them to the moon. Later missions used the third stage to purposely impact the moon to measure the seismic results with the detectors left by astronauts, to help learn about the moon's interior.
